Kiln Drama

Unloading the kiln yesterday, I had to clean up a couple of explosions. There is one more shelf of broken ware that I didn't photograph. What are a couple of the reasons that these explosions might have occurred?

  1. The only reason for ceramics to explode in a kiln that I know of is if there are any enclosed air bubbles or pockets in the piece. The clay may not have been wedged well enough, or someone's piece contained some hollow pieces. Also, maybe if a piece of theirs cracked off, and they tried to mend it by slipping it back together or something, some air could have gotten trapped in between the pieces if they weren't careful.
