Extra Help with Portraits

If you want one of the best books on drawing, I recommend Betty Edwards' "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." There also is a tutorial site that I found to be quite helpful.

Bernhard of Clairvaux: Initial B from a 13th century illuminated manuscript

Amazing job with printmaking!

Now, we're going to engage in a crash-course in clay work. As preparation for our first project, please check out some information on Illuminated Letters. When finished, you will design an original illuminated letter, sketching the 5" x 5" design in your sketchbook. Your design should combine lettering, illustration, and a border. Consider the final medium (clay) during your planning.

The Value of Artwork

In 7th period today, a great discussion about the value of artwork occurred. The discussion was in response to the Picasso artwork that was torn by a woman, thereby reducing the value by a few million dollars.

So, why is artwork valuable? I found an article with a few ideas. I'd like to hear what you think.

Also, do you have an idea for a Drawing of the Week? Please post ideas under the current DOTW posting.

Human Figure Sculpture

Henry Moore, "Reclining Figure" 1951

Art I
Figure Drawing Unit, Part I: Human Figure Sculpture

So far, you have created a croquis, measured your proportions, and captured the movement and energy of poses by drawing gestures of the human figure.

Now, we're going to transfer our 2D drawings to a 3D paper sculpture of the human form. For inspiration, please pick a quote concerning power. This quote will be incorporated into your sculpture. You can pick your own quote, or here are some ideas:
  • Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other. --Carl Jung
  • The first principal of nonviolent action is that of noncooperation with everything humiliating. --Cesar Chavez
  • Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. --Frederick Douglass
  • Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself. --Gloria Steinem
  • When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. --Jimi Hendrix
  • Washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral. --Paolo Freire
  • He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still. --Lao Tzu
  • Almost everything we'll ever do in life that is really powerful, that really produces a result in our lives, that quantum-leaps us to a new level... requires us to do something uncomfortable. --Jack Canfield
  • The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. --Ferdinand Foch
  • I cannot do without something greater than I, something that is my life – the power to create. --Vincent Van Gogh
  • There is a power in everything; it is the job of the artist to determine it and express it. --Mencius
