Human Figure Sculpture

Henry Moore, "Reclining Figure" 1951

Art I
Figure Drawing Unit, Part I: Human Figure Sculpture

So far, you have created a croquis, measured your proportions, and captured the movement and energy of poses by drawing gestures of the human figure.

Now, we're going to transfer our 2D drawings to a 3D paper sculpture of the human form. For inspiration, please pick a quote concerning power. This quote will be incorporated into your sculpture. You can pick your own quote, or here are some ideas:
  • Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other. --Carl Jung
  • The first principal of nonviolent action is that of noncooperation with everything humiliating. --Cesar Chavez
  • Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. --Frederick Douglass
  • Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself. --Gloria Steinem
  • When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. --Jimi Hendrix
  • Washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral. --Paolo Freire
  • He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still. --Lao Tzu
  • Almost everything we'll ever do in life that is really powerful, that really produces a result in our lives, that quantum-leaps us to a new level... requires us to do something uncomfortable. --Jack Canfield
  • The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. --Ferdinand Foch
  • I cannot do without something greater than I, something that is my life – the power to create. --Vincent Van Gogh
  • There is a power in everything; it is the job of the artist to determine it and express it. --Mencius
