Week Two Rituals--P18

"From the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape . . . We must pick out what is good for us where we can find it." -- Pablo Picasso

"We should talk less, and draw more. Personally, I would like to renounce speech altogether, and like organic nature, communicate everything I have to say in sketches.." --Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"Line is a rich metaphor for the artist. It denotes not only boundary, edge, or contour, but is an agent for location, energy, and growth. It is literally movement and change--life itself." --Lance Esplund

"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." --Herman Melville.

  1. Why did Lance Esplund say a line change lives?

  4. I agree with the quote "It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." Anything can be "better" just because it's something new and different from what has already been created. Plus, you have the personal satisfaction of making it yourself. ~Clarissa S.

  6. All these quotes must have that connection where when doing art, we all have that creativity. We can communicate through the form of art and having that originality within ourselves, just having that difficulty to bring it out on a simple piece of paper. -Jacque Billy

  7. Excellent choices for the quotes, it helps to understand another artists point of view, and I agree with the most of the quotes, because they are things that I personally believe in, the only one I don't agree with is von Gothes quote, only for the fact that many people don't understand what exactly you are saying with a piece of art, sometimes its easy to see, like a landscape drawing, other times, it will take a long time to decipher a strange piece, like modernist art.

  8. I agree with the quote," It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation," because the only way to learn is to fail, and I feel it is better to do your own work than to copy someone else's.

  9. I disagree with the second quote because not everyone is considered an artist. some my have the skill to communicate with sketches and some don't.

  10. I couldn't agree more with Herman Melville. we get so caught up in the fear of failure, we would rather immitate someone else than just be our selves and in doing that, we often find that what we think is a failure, is beautiful.

  11. I feel that Herman Melville's comment was the most useful. The message is simple, but it can really inspire you.
